Set of 5 Shino Bowls
Set of 5 tea bowls finished in Shino. (Although there are 6 in the photo, only 5 are available in this set as one was chipped)
Shino is one of the oldest glazes in the Japanese tradition, developed in the Mino kilns in the late sixteenth century, the finish was a favorite of the tea masters of the Momoyama period. Shino is applied as a thick white glaze that breaks to orange, with charcoal grey spotting known as carbon trap where carbon is being caught in the glaze during firing. No two pieces come out alike. This teapot holds significant carbon trapping, the surface reading dark and shadowed where the kiln's atmosphere settled into the glaze.
